There’s been a spate of crackdowns on union and worker activists this week. At Efco Egypt in Suez, 6 workers who played leading roles in a recent strike at the company have been fired. And at the south Cairo grain mills 8 members of the local union committee are being sent to disciplinary hearings at the general union, who refused to support the recent series of protests there. And finally, City Cab – one of the companies operating the yellow “tourist taxis” in Cairo – has threatened 8 drivers with dismissal after they participated in a protest last week and their pictures appeared in al-Badeel. Meanwhile, next week a court in Mahalla will examine the libel case filed by the manager of Misr Spinning and Weaving against 2 workers and 3 journalists.
