It’s really comical following MB Supreme Guide Mahdi Akef’s publicly stated positions vis a vis Gamal Mubarak.
In April 2009, Yasmine Saleh of the Daily News Egypt reviewed Al-Jazeera’s interview with Akef, where the latter
also said that the MB welcomes the nomination of Gamal Mubarak, the son of current President Hosni Mubarak and chairman of the policies committee in the ruling National Democratic Party, in the coming presidential race.
“But, as we have said before, Gamal Mubarak must first leave his father’s palace and run for the presidency as a regular Egyptian citizen,” he said.
But in April 2008, the same Yasmine Saleh, wrote for the same Daily News Egypt, about the same Akef making
statements this week rejecting the idea of Gamal Mubarak becoming the next president of Egypt, especially “given the country’s current status,” according to a press statement sent to Daily News Egypt.
In an interview with the German News Agency, Akef said that before, he was actually in favor of Gamal Mubarak being the next president, however, his attitude changed after the changes Article 76 of the constitution underwent — modifying the criteria for would-be presidential candidates.
It gets even more comical if you for example google those three words together: “Akef”, “Gamal”, “Mubarak”. Do that and enjoy the tons of reports (more if you do the search in Arabic) quoting Akef where he’s changing his mind about Gamal Mubarak sometimes almost on a monthly basis.
He’s in a tougher spot now with this Hizbullah-Hamas weapons smuggling, a lot of people are calling for the SS to reveal MB involvement (which is probable) and several lawyers have asked to file suits against Akef personally. I think even the regime is hesitating in inflating the Hizbullah business into a new confrontation with the MB.
