Solidarity with the Mahalla strikers from Alexandria

A solidarity statement with the Mahalla strikers has been issued, jointly signed by the Alexandria Port workers, Kefaya’s chapter in Alexandria, the Socialist Students in Alexandria, and the Center for Socialist Studies (Alexandria).

Journalist Liam Stack of the Daily Star Egypt traveled to Mahalla yesterday. Here are some pix he took of the fourth day of Ghazl el-Mahalla strike:

Liam writes: "This man, who was afraid to give us his name, says they are not paid enough to cover expenses like rent, utilities, groceries, school fees and medicine. If there is an illness or wedding in the family, or a holiday, working families in Mahalla may face financial ruin."

Liam writes: " 27,000 workers are participating in the strike, which is the second to shut down the Misr Spinning and Weaving Company in the last 10 months. They say the company is corrupt and that neither management nor the government had fulfilled promises they made after the last strike."

I’ve spoken with a Socialist activist inside the factory. There’s a delegation of NDP MPs already in the factory now to make some offer.

No more details yet, but I can hear strong chants in the background from the workers, songs, drum beats.
