Update on the Mansoura-España garment workers

Posted on 13/02/200807/02/2021 By 3arabawy

Strikes are the only way to liberate women

I had stopped reporting on the Mansoura España Garments Company workers, since July, following the implementation of some of the clauses of the agreement brokered between them and the United Bank, which was considered a victory.

When I went back to Cairo last December for a month, I was told, by a Socialist activist, shortly before leaving back to the US that the United Bank is “trying to dodge the agreement” again, and is planning to sell the factory and liquidate the business. I phoned one of my contacts in the factory, and he confirmed there were “troubles,” but he was about then to meet with the Labor Ministry officials in Cairo for negotiations. I left on the following day to the US, and didn’t follow up on what happened. However, I was troubled today to read this update on the factory by Kareem el-Beheiri, who says the Factory Union Committee is conspiring with the United Bank to facilitate the sale of the company without giving the workers the rest of their rights.

I hope if a fellow journalist and/or activist reads this to follow up on the subject. We need more details and the latest updates to see the best way to organize a solidarity campaign.

Lawyers Syndicate protest corruption, bread queues

From the Daily News Egypt:

The Lawyers’ Syndicate’s freedoms committee announced yesterday that it was launching legal action in the case of a man who died while queuing for state-subsidized bread, as part of its efforts in combating corruption.
The committee organized a protest Wednesday against corruption and political detention outside the Syndicate’s headquarters in Cairo. Holding up placards reading “No to the political detention of lawyers” and “No to a government of businessmen,” protesters chanted “The people want freedom” and “No to corruption, no to political detention” during the two-hour protest.

Greece on STRIKE!

Posted on 13/02/200813/01/2021 By 3arabawy

I love the Greeks!

Thousands of demonstrators have marched through Athens and Thessaloniki to protest against government social security reforms as a general strike shut down schools, hospitals and all public services.
Port workers and air traffic controllers joined the protest on Wednesday, the second 24-hour general strike in the last two months.
The move forced authorities to cancel all flights to and from Greek airports, and all regular ferry routes to the country’s islands.
Buses, trains and the Athens metro were running for only a few hours during the day.
Journalists went on strike, cancelling all news bulletins and current affairs programmes for the day.
Dentists, lawyers, construction workers and civil servants also left their jobs.
Greece’s two main labor unions called the strike to protest against the conservative government’s efforts to reform Greece’s debt-ridden and fractured pension system.
