Conscripts

Conscripts مجندون

Conscript مجند

As in every demo, I tried to chat with the Central Security Forces conscripts. The reactions are usually mixed. On Sunday, I felt they were very chatty whenever their officers were not around.

The conscripts were complaining they were mobilized out of their camps (Ahmad Shawqi’s Sector, Nasr City) into the downtown Cairo parliament street as early as 6am. One of them kept looking to the officers and was murmuring: “Kossom el-Zobbat! Kossom el-Zobbat!” (Fuck the officers! Fuck the officers!). They hated their jobs. They hated their superiors. They hated the fact that they were ordered to intimidate fellow citizens who are just as poor as them.

Still when the orders came to disperse the strikers, they did it. But I’m sure they did unwillingly, and because they still fear their officers’ reprisals. All signs say, however, this paramilitary force the regime uses cannot and will not stand against a 1977 scenario.

Down with Mubarak.

Students in solidarity with Gaza

I received the following press release:

Students in Solidarity with Gaza
Contact: Kat Sullivan
Mobile Cairo: 019.264.1283
On Monday May 25th, a group of students from Cairo attempted to enter the Gaza border to deliver aid. Thus far, all efforts to enter have been stopped by Egyptian authorities.
The student delegation from Cairo is planning to meet with numerous other delegations from around the globe. Each group has medical aid and supplies, sports equipment for children and monetary donations. The Egyptian authorities have been completely aware of everyone attending and everything that we are carrying. All members attending were told that they were given full clearance to enter Gaza. However, now at the border, they suddenly refuse. We are being either blocked from entering or even turned back at checkpoints before the border
itself.
Knowing that our efforts are supported worldwide, we are compelled to reach out to all media outlets within and without Cairo, Egypt.
