The Center for Socialist Studies, Workers for Change, the Workers Coordination Committee, The Workers’ Solidarity Committee and the Socialist Afaq Center are calling for a solidarity demonstration in front of the Parliament, tomorrow Thursday 1pm, in support of the Real Estate Tax Strikers. Ghazl el-Mahalla workers are mobilizing for a simultaneous protest at El-Shoun Sq in Mahalla.
Real Estate Tax Collectors’ Strike Continues
I spent the day, together with a number of left-wing bloggers and journalists, at the “camp” set up by the Tax Strikers and their families in front of the Ministerial Cabinet HQ in Downtown Cairo. Roughly two thousand Real Estate Tax Officers are protesting, with their families, in front of the ministerial cabinet HQ in Downtown Cairo. Around 55,000 officers are taking part in the national strike. More photos, reports, updates, announcements, calls for solidarity coming soon.
New HRW report: How Mubarak’s State Security Police fabricates terror cases
Tomorrow morning, a report I co-researched for Human Rights Watch, titled “Anatomy of a State Security Case: The “Victorious Sect” Arrests” will finally be launched online. The report investigates how Mubarak’s State Security Police fabricates terror cases, taking the “Victorious Sect” round-ups in the spring of 2006 as a case study.
I had the pleasure of working with HRW’s senior investigative lawyer John Sifton, of the Terrorism/Counterterrorism Program, this summer on the report in the months before I took off to Berkeley. Some additional research had to be done while I was in the US, and then the report was further delayed to confirm more details and update some sections. I’m glad it’s finally out.
The report will also be available in Arabic.
