General Hassan el-Roweini in Tahrir Square on 5 February, arrogantly talking to protesters and journalists, during his attempt to disperse the sit-in.

General Hassan el-Roweini, the commander of the Central Zone, is a familiar face. He showed up in Tahrir several times during the uprising, with the intent of suspending it. He accused us on the day of the Battle of Camel of “acting and that there were no martyrs killed by Mubarak’s thugs” as the army stood by watching. Each time Roweini appears on TV, prepare yourself for a doze of lies, propaganda and incitement against the revolution.

Interestingly, the general doesn’t hide the fact he’s a liar. In the interview above, he admits that during the uprising, he used to spread rumors in order to diffuse the anger of protesters in Tahrir.

This is the same general who now accuses the revolutionaries of being “foreign paid agents, thugs, traitors, saboteurs.” How can anyone believe this liar today?

General Hassan el-Roweini, head of the army’s Central Zone Command, showed up in Tahrir on 5 February, trying to convince the protesters of suspending the sit-in, following the “Battle of the Camel”, when Mubarak’s thugs descended on Tahrir to slaughter us under the watchful “neutral” eye of the army. In the video above, General el-Roweini describes the Tahrir occupation as a “soap opera” and denies knowledge of any protesters killed by the thugs.

The brave doctors in the makeshift clinic responded back to his allegations, and refused to go away. I don’t know who’s “Doctor Sherif” who appears in the video, but I salute his bravery.

On Friday February 25th, around 150 protesters decided to sit-in in front of the cabinet of ministers calling for the resignation of Ahmad Shafik’s government, the removal of the Emergency Law, and dissolving State Security. First, around 11:27 pm, we were kettled by military police and army men with weapons.
At the same time, strikers in Tahrir Square were being beaten and evacuated by force by these masked army men. Kasr el Aini st. was also closed off from anyone who wanted to join our sit-in in front of the cabinet offices. Next around 12:58 am, came this Army General Hassan El Rewany shown in this video telling us “I have orders to clear the place.” Not a minute after, as shown in the video, we hear the electric cattle prods, and military police together with army men start beating, arresting, and running after protesters.
General Hassan El Rewany has now become familiar among activists for being “in charge” of the Tahrir area always urging protesters to go home, or physically confronting them.
This was one of many incidents the army showed their real face using force against protesters, even when they constantly claim to be the “protectors of the Jan25th revolution.”
I would say actions speak louder than words…
