VIDEOGATE: Two police officers, a corporal to be tried in court

Posted on 28/12/200623/01/2024 By 3arabawy

Two police officers and a corporal will be referred to the Cairo Criminal Court “within few days” to stand trial for charges of abusing citizens in custody, in the latest development of police torture videos scandal.

Prosecutor Bakr Ahmad Bakr, reported Al-Masry Al-Youm today, decided there was sufficient evidence to prosecute Officer Islam Nabih and Corporal Reda Fathi of Bulaq al-Dakrour Police Station (seen in action above), as well as Lieutenant Mustafa Shehata of El-Haram Police Station (seen in action below).

Meanwhile, a source inside the State TV & Radio building told Al-Masry Al-Youm “security procedures are being taken” inside the building to determine the identity of the woman believed to be the victim in the third video clip under investigation.

Note there are other videos the prosecution is not looking into, including those from Imbaba Police Station, like this one…

and this one…

and this one from the El-Montaza Police Station…

and this one in Giza…

and this one in Cairo downtown…

And this one of Mubarak Police Academy Cadets in training…

and this one from Kefaya’s anti-corruption protest…

You add to that the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of cases of police brutality and abuse under Mubarak’s regime against political detainees and ordinary citizens…

Anyways, I wish Islam Nabih, Reda Fathi and Mustafa Shehata all the best with the shame and public humiliation they will bring on themselves and their families.

The Egyptian police brutality videos scandal is snowballing. Rights lawyer Nasser Amin told Al-Masry Al-Youm that he was close to identifying the woman who appeared in one of the police brutality videos, getting whipped by a plainclothes police official. Amin said the woman worked for the Egyptian State TV & Radio, and that the torture incident happened in one of Cairo’s police stations. The torturer, according to Amin, is a police corporal.

Al-Masry Al-Youm also provided more details about the current investigation into Emad Kabeer’s torture case, where Officer Islam Nabih and Corporal Reda Fathi are being charged with abuse. Prosecutor Bakr Ahmad Bakr requested the technical expertise of an Egyptian State TV official who looked into the videos. The official testified that the torture videos circulated by the bloggers were authentic, neither fabricated nor montaged. Up on hearing that, Officer Islam Nabih tried to assault the technical expert inside the prosecutor’s office, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported!!!

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Mustafa Shehata of El-Haram Police Station (Seen in action below) continues to perform his duties with all devotion in Giza, having escaped suspension from work due to his strong connections in General Habib el-Adly’s Interior Ministry, as Wael Abdel Fattah of Al-Fagr reported.

Egypt prosecutor detains officer accused of torture

Great news! The officer who tortured and sexually abused driver Emad Kabeer will be prosecuted.

But that will not end the practice. Those are not just “few rotten apples.” Mubarak’s policing system is classist, abusive, unprofessional and repressive. Still the campaign launched by the Egyptian bloggers and the independent press was strong enough to push the regime to start investigating the case. This sends a powerful message to anyone who’s involved in torture: Your victims will not be silent any more:

Egypt prosecutor detains officer accused of torture
26 Dec 2006
CAIRO, Dec 26 (Reuters) – An Egyptian prosecutor ordered the four-day detention of a police officer accused of sexually assaulting a prisoner, judicial sources said on Tuesday.
They said prosecutor Bakr Ahmad Bakr questioned assistant-investigation officer Islam Nabih on Tuesday. He also ordered the detention of Reda Fathi, a non-commissioned officer, for four days.
A video circulated on Egyptian blogs last month and sparked uproar. It showed Imad al-Kabir, a bus driver, lying on the floor, naked from the waist down, with his hands bound behind his back and his legs held in the air.
He screams and begs as he is sodomised with a stick while those around him, whose faces are not visible, taunt him.
Kabir’s lawyer has said the torture took place in January 2006 in a police station in Bulaq al-Dakrur after Kabir was detained and beaten for intervening to stop an argument between the police officers and his brother.
