Mazut price hike domino effect reaches sugar, paper, building materials

Posted on 13/01/200830/12/2020 By 3arabawy

From the Daily News Egypt:

The 100 percent hike in the price of mazut (fuel oil) from LE 500 to LE 1,000 per ton caused a domino-effect in the market, elevating prices of building materials, sugar and paper.
The government’s decision sparked turmoil in sectors that heavily rely on fuel oil for production. Brick kilns producers were among the first to feel the effect, reporting a slump in sales after the price increase.
Producers explained that contracts with dealers were based on old prices but had to be modified after the mazut price increase, as it constitutes 45 percent of operating costs. Dealers, however, rejected the price change.
Prices of bricks have already gone up early this year to LE 515 per ton and then soared to LE 1,020, following the mazut price upsurges.
The decision has also adversely affect prices of cement, which have been rising almost steadily to LE 410-420 per ton. The price hike is expected to heavily impact the country’s housing market.

While the Cairo protest has been called off, I’m receiving news from Mahalla that more than 1,000 workers and political activists have turned out to protest increase in prices of basic commodities. The demonstration is still going on now, and is taking place at El-Shoun Sq.

UPDATE: I chatted with Kareem el-Beheiri who attended today’s Mahalla’s protest:

Mubarak’s nuclear program

Posted on 02/11/200718/01/2021 By 3arabawy

The regime has shown over and over and over and over again that it cannot handle infrastructure projects, housing, sewage, water, trains, buses, roads, and now they are going nuclear?! If you cannot take care of your trains, how will you take care of the nuclear reactors?!!

And what a cheap move to appease the national sentiments of the public. And I guess it worked for the confused nationalist opposition, including Hamdeen Sabbahi (see video below) of the Nasserist Karama, who declared support for the move.

I totally oppose this move. I do not trust the regime with one gram of uranium. Power could be generated by dzillion other safer ways than nuclear energy.

Down with Mubarak!
