About 3,000 garbage collectors in Eastern Shobra el-Kheima (Cairo) staged an open sit-in yesterday in front of the district headquarters in protest against the decision taken by Major General Fawzi el-Shami, the head of the local council, to stop paying their salaries and impose deductions on them as much as twice their salaries.
They raised slogans such as “No more injustice”, “Where is justice, Adli Hussein?” and “Save us from the head of the local council”

Police detain Giza strikers

Agents from the Omraniya Police Station arrested yesterday a number of garbage collectors, who are involved in the ongoing strike over unpaid salaries, and transferred them to the 6th of October Prosecutor’s Office, on charges of illegal assembly.

The police had invited a number of strikers to the station for negotiations with the company managers. When the strikers arrived, they found out it was a trap, and the police detained them immediately.

Textile workers strikes and sit-ins continue in Suez and Daqahliya provinces, while 1400 garbage collectors went on strike yesterday in Giza, demanding their unpaid salaries. The garbage collectors assembled in front of their company, carrying banners with cartoons, depicting their company management as “Monster with Fangs,” and slogans like: “Cleaning Companies Launch Terrorist Campaigns (Against Workers)… Rescue Us from the Companies’ Oppression.”

Giza garbage collectors end their strike

Around 3,000 garbage collectors in Giza ended their two-day strike on Wednesday, following threats from the company management threatened to fire them all, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.

The strike started after the Giza governor decided to fire General Hafez Fekri, the head of Giza Cleaning & Beautification Authorities. The garbage collectors went on strike and protested in front of the Giza governorate HQ, denouncing the decision.

It may be unusual to find some workers going on strike in solidarity with their boss, but in the case of those garbage collectors, they feared the firing would be accompanied by taking away the bonuses and financial gains they achieved under the directorship of General Fekri.

“The strike did not just end by intimidating the garbage collectors,” a socialist journalist who followed the strike told me. “The company management assured the strikers that their gains would not be taken away, and that’s when the garbage collectors decided to suspend their action.”

Maadi garbage collectors demonstrate; El-Haram Hospital workers on strike

Dozens of Maadi garbage collectors demonstrated in front of Cairo’s Cleaning Authorities in Abassiya Square on Monday demanding their fees from the private company “Europe 2000,” which runs the garbage collection and street cleaning operation’s in Cairo’s southern upscale neigborhood. The workers told Al-Masry Al-Youm that they have not been paid since since 2004, and are subject to royalties and intimidation from the company and the municipal authorities.

In other developments, Al-Wafd reported that 500 hospital workers have gone on strike in El-Haram Hospital, in Giza on Tuesday morning, after not receiving their salaries for two months.

And on another front, the signatories to the Mahalla Textile workers petition to dissolve their Factory Committee (after the latter conspired with the management during last December’s strike) have exceeded 15,000–even more than the number required by labor law to dissolve their union. The workers, according to socialist sources, have announced either the government-controlled General Federation of Trade Unions accept their petition, or the workers will resign en masse from the union, stop paying their membership fees…. and form a new independent labor union.

Again, keep your eyes on Mahalla. More interesting developments are expected in the next couple of weeks…
