Among the sets I found on the Nasr City SS DVDs was one of Brigadier General Muhammad Mahmoud Borghosh.

The officer’s name was mentioned in the infamous case filed by NDP lawyer Samir el-Sheshtawi against Ad-Dustour editor and dissident journalist Ibrahim Eissa. The latter was sentenced to prison over bogus charges, but was “pardoned” by Mubarak in a PR move.

Judge Mahmoud Hamza, one of the reformist Judges who took part the “Judges Intifada” accused Borghosh of taking part in the brutal assault against him on 23 April 2006, as SS and the Central Security Forces moved in to suspend the sit in staged by activists in solidarity with the reformist Judges in downtown Cairo.

Brigadier General Borghosh is no stranger to human rights activists. Lawyer Gamal Eid wrote me:

محمد برغش.. أحد ضباط أمن الدولة سيئ السمعة. كان ضمن المسئولين عن ملف المحامين والقضاء، وبدءا من عام 2003 ، أصبح مسئول ملف القضاء فقط وكان أعلى وسيط امن الدولة في التعامل مع القضاة. وخلال محاكمة أيمن نور كان دوره أهم من عادل عبدالسلام جمعة رجل الحكومة في القضاء. وإذا استطعت الوصول لصور من محاكمات أيمن نور التي حضرتها كمراقب للهيومان رايتس ووتش كان دائما ما يقف على المنصة خلف القضاة الثلاثة فضلا عن دوره في توجيه محاكمة البسطويسي ومكي التي .فبركها النظام السابق

Eid describes Borgosh as

…one of the State Security Police officers with the worst reputations. He was in charge of the lawyers’ and judges’ file… and was the most senior liaison between State Security Police and the Judges. During Ayman Nour’s trial, his [Borghosh’s] role was more important than the pro-government presiding judge, Adel Abdel Salam Goma’a. If you can get hold of any of the photos of Ayman Nour’s trial sessions, which I attended as a monitor for Human Rights Watch, you’ll find him [Borghosh] always standing behind the judges’ bench. Needless to say, he had a role in directing the trial of [Judges Hisham] el-Bastaweesi and Mahmoud Mekki.

Why isn’t Brigadier General Borghosh on trial now? Will he be part of the newly established National Security Sector?

طالب المستشار زكريا عبد العزيز، رئيس نادي قضاة مصر، بالتحقيق في وقائع احتجاز معتقلي إضراب 6 أبريل دون وجه حق.
وشدد في خطاب رسمي أرسله – أمس- إلي المستشار عبدالمجيد محمود، النائب العام بناء علي شكوي تلقاها من ثلاثة معتقلين سياسيين بسجن برج العرب بالإسكندرية علي ضرورة اتخاذ الإجراءات القانونية اللازمة في هذه الشكوي.
وقال عبد العزيز لـ «البديل»: إن صح ما ورد بهذه الشكوي باستمرار احتجاز المتهمين بعد قرار النيابة العامة والمحكمة بإخلاء سبيلهم فالأمر خطير جداً، ولابد من محاسبة كل من يثبت تورطه في هذه الجريمة سواء بالحجز دون وجه حق أو التعذيب واستعمال القسوة.
وأضاف أن إفراج النيابة العامة عن المتهمين بعد فحص الأوراق جيداً يؤكد أنها لم تجد ما يستدعي الحبس الاحتياطي.
«ولكن لا يوجد احترام للقانون».
وتابع عبد العزيز: «استناد وزارة الداخلية لقانون الطوارئ، واعتقالها المواطنين بدعوي وجود خطورة للمتهم، يعني عدم أداء رجال الداخلية دورهم الحقيقي في منع الجريمة، الذي لا يكون بالاعتقال وإنما بإشاعة جو من الديمقراطية والحرية والعدل وتوفير مقومات الحياة الأساسية للمواطنين.
وحذر عبد العزيز من أن عدم احترام قرارات النيابة العامة يؤدي إلي تقويض دعائم نظام الحكم، وتلقي المستشار زكريا عبد العزيز شكوي من المعتقلين هم كمال الفيومي، وطارق أمين، وكريم البحيري الذين أكدوا استمرارهم في الإضراب عن الطعام حتي الموت أو معرفة سبب اعتقالهم، وقالوا إن إدارة السجن رفضت استدعاء سيارة إسعاف لنقلهم إلي المستشفي بعد استمرار إضرابهم مدة تجاوزت الأسبوع.
وقالوا إن إدارة السجن استدعت ممرضاً لفحص حالتهم الصحية، ولفتوا إلي تعرضهم للتعذيب في مقر مباحث أمن الدولة في المحلة أيام 6، 7، 8 أبريل الماضي، وصعقهم بالكهرباء، وتوجيه الإهانات والضرب إليهم.
وطالب المعتقلون بتحرك نادي القضاة وجميع القوي السياسية للضغط من أجل الإفراج عن جميع المعتقلين في أحداث المحلة

The Arabic network for human rights information and Hisham Mubarak Law Center, two human rights organizations, stated today that the next Saturday December 29, 2007, will witness a very significant event. The administrative court will issue a sentence that will affect the future of internet & its freedom in Egypt. The sentence will be issued in the case that was filed by the judge Abdul Fattah Murad last February. Judge Murad launched his case demanding the banning of 51 websites in Egypt. He alleged that such websites defame, in their contents, the Egyptian government. The case came as a consequence of the detection of an assault against the intellectual property of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information by Judge Murad, as he published a profiting book containing dozens of copied pages pages of one of the network reports without referring to the source.

A Egyptian court has sentenced three journalists to two years in jail for “damaging the image of justice”.
Anwar al-Hawari, the editor of Al-Wafd, a newspaper for the opposition party of the same name, was jailed for publishing “untrue information which damaged the reputation of the justice system and the justice ministry”, the court ruled.
The two other journalists were Mahmud Ghallab and Amir Othman.
The three did not attend the hearing and remain free on bail, pending an appeal.
A judicial source has said that they were also ordered to pay small fines.
The judge had accepted the case filed by several Egyptian lawyers after Al-Wafd had quoted Mamduh Mari, the justice minister, as saying that 90 per cent of Egyptian judges were incompetent.
