Judge Mekki: No hope for reform under Mubarak

The deputy head of the Cassation Court, Judge Ahmad Mekki, lashed out against the constitutional amendments process, saying the regime’s proposed counterterrorism-related amendments would stiffle dissent, and “make even garbage-throwing a terrorist crime.” The judge added, “there is no hope for any reform under this regime.”

Judges to campaign against Mubarak’s proposed counterterrorism law

The Judges’ Club has announced it will be launching a campaign against Mubarak’s proposed constitutional amendments, and in specific: a) Mubarak’s proposal to change Article 88 of the constitution that enforces judicial supervision over elections; b) the proposed counterterrorism law which is to replace the Emergency Law Egypt has lived under since the start of Mubarak’s reign. The counterterrorism law is expected to basically make the current Emergency Law a permanent reality.

Pro-Judges demo Friday

Kefaya is calling for a demonstration to support judicial independence in Egypt, Friday 17 November at 1pm, in Abdel Khaleq Tharwat Street, on the same day the Judges’ Club general assembly will be convening.
