Kefaya denounces MB arrests

Posted on 24/12/200626/12/2020 By 3arabawy

The security crackdown against Muslim Brotherhood leaders and student activists is the beginning for a wider crackdown on all forms of dissent in Egypt, Kefaya said today in a statement. The movement extended its solidarity to the Islamist opposition, warning the country’s political forces not to get distracted by side battles. “No matter what was said about the Azhar students’ actions… it is the regime and its security services who are the real criminals,” the statement charged. “The security services ceased protecting ordinary citizens and have become solely devoted to protecting the ruling regime. This regime mobilized its forces to smash peaceful protests over the past two years. This regime unleashed thugs to beat and kidnap peaceful citizens from the streets in April and May 2006 for their solidarity with the judges. This regime used thugs to prevent the opposition of winning in November 2005 parliamentary elections. This regime openned the doors of Ain Shams University for thugs, and stormed Cairo University few weeks ago. This regime has adopted arbitrary detentions and torture as a rule, not an exception.”

It is this regime that all should unite in confronting, the statement asserted, calling for the release of the detained MB Azhar students.

Kefaya activist detained

Posted on 18/12/200626/12/2020 By 3arabawy

Police detained yesterday Fathi Farid, a student at Al-Azhar and a member of Kefaya’s youth wing, while he was entering the university campus. The University guards took him at the gate to the office of the University Security office, after which he disappeared.

Kefaya learned later he was taken yesterday to the Gamaleya Police Station, and was referred today to the Gamaleya prosecutor’s office, who charged Fathi of agitation for demonstrations on campus.

On another front, the President of Al-Azhar University Ahmad el-Tayyeb defended the kidnapping of 180 MB students from the university dorms. He told Al-Masry Al-Youm security services had been “late and should have detained the Brotherhood activists since the beginning of the semester.” Tayyeb also proudly stated: “I am a man who does not speak in politics. I never joined any student union in my university years, because I believe students should just focus on learning.”

UPDATE: Fathi was released Tuesday morning.

Kefaya demonstrates against Mubarak

Kefaya’s demo that was scheduled to happen in front of the Public Prosecutor’s office on Monday, was moved due to security siege to the Lawyers’ Syndicate and the Press Syndicate.

Around 100 assembled in front of the Lawyers’ Syndicate, while 300 others managed to gather in front of the Press Syndicate.

Demonstrators chanted against Mubarak, corruption, and police torture. Activists also extended their solidarity to the Lebanese opposition fighting a US-client government in Beirut. “Hosni Mubarak and Sanioura–Bush is the original, they are the photocopies,” went the chants. The Mahalla textile strikers got also a lion-share of chants in support of their struggle against their corrupt neo-liberal management.

Protesters clashed on several occasions with the Central Security Forces troops that surrounded the Press Syndicate, leading to minor injuries. Photos below, taken by Nasser Nouri:

The Revolutionary Socialists distributed leaflets during the demo, calling for wider mobilization within the factories, university campuses, professional syndicates to achieve the radical political change Egypt needs–rather than focusing the struggle on narrow, superficial constitutional amendments within the parliament.

I left the scene of the protests by 4:05pm. By then, 400 demonstrators at the Press Syndicate were chanting, demanding the execution of President Hosni Mubarak on charges of treason and mass torture.
