The father of the microbus driver, Atef, who was shot by a police officer in Maadi, talks to Al-Shorouq, with other eyewitnesses.

And with their usual cowardice, the police forces in Maadi and Bassateen have vanished and officers rushed to hide at their homes fearing the protests.

A fight broke out today between a microbus driver and a police officer, Salah Ashraf el-Saggini, in Maadi’s Algeria Square. The fight was over the right of way. Officer Ashraf pulled his gun and shot dead the driver. The citizens attacked the police van, set it on fire after beating the officer and his soldiers, and handed them over to the army. There are protests taking place as I’m writing now.

There is also a police crackdown on protesters in Wadi el-Gadid, and some of a number of Sinai citizens who’s just been released are now in detention again.

So much for change! Wake up people, the regime is still alive and well! The revolution must continue.

UPDATE: The driver hasn’t died, as reported by Youm7 and Ahram, but he’s been critically injured.

A court sentenced two Giza police corporals to only five years in prison for killing a plumber in Omraniya by throwing him off the fourth floor.

And in Damanhour, State Security police threw Muslim Brotherhood activist Fares Barakat off the fourth floor for daring to ask whether the police had a search warrant to storm his house.

And let’s not forget Maadi resident Shereen Ghareeb who also flew from his fourth floor balcony, with a little help from officer Shehab el-Sha’er. The latter got away with murder because he is the nephew of the Cairo Security Director General Ismail el-Sha’er.

Thank God I live on the ground floor.

Al-Masry Al-Youm is reporting that 7,000 residents from the Nasr slum, in Maadi took blocked the highroad protesting drinking water shortages. The citizens were carrying empty plastic containers. They were dispersed by the police which threatened to use live ammunition.

In the evening, journalists marked the victims of torture by standing in silence at the Press Syndicate.

While in Tanta, 200 farmers protested demanding the govt fulfilled its promises of supplying them with fertilizers.

In other developments, Al-Wafd reported that 500 hospital workers have gone on strike in El-Haram Hospital, in Giza on Tuesday morning, after not receiving their salaries for two months.

And on another front, the signatories to the Mahalla Textile workers petition to dissolve their Factory Committee (after the latter conspired with the management during last December’s strike) have exceeded 15,000–even more than the number required by labor law to dissolve their union. The workers, according to socialist sources, have announced either the government-controlled General Federation of Trade Unions accept their petition, or the workers will resign en masse from the union, stop paying their membership fees…. and form a new independent labor union.

Again, keep your eyes on Mahalla. More interesting developments are expected in the next couple of weeks…
