In issuing its report to mark World Press Freedom Day, May 3, CPJ is calling attention this year to long-term erosion in press conditions. Rounding out CPJ’s “Top 10 Backsliders” are Pakistan, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Morocco, and Thailand.

Police silence torture victims

Mubarak’s police crusade to silence torture victims continues.

A Giza police force raided the house of a citizen Monday, around 8pm, and kidnapped him for an hour and half, to prevent him from speaking to Al-Mehwar satellite channel about his ordeal. The citizen, by the name Hanna, had been detained for two years on the roof top of a police station without a court order!

Also, two MPs charged yesterday that “Egyptian police stations have turned into slaughterhouses,” adding that “forced disappearances (of suspects) have become a phenomenon.”

Govt censors opposition paper

Security services have confiscated all copies of the weekly Al-Karama’s latest issue, due to hit the news stands last night.

The issue included critical articles of Mubarak’s constitutional amendments, and its frontpage headline said: “Together to topple a dictator.”
