3 killed in building collapse in Cairo working class neighborhood

More disasters in the working class neighborhood of Sayyeda Zeinab, the constituency of Fathi Surrur, the NDP parliament speaker:

CAIRO, May 6 (Reuters) – Three people were killed on Sunday when a 4-storey apartment building collapsed in a poor neighborhood of Cairo, security sources said.
They said two bodies had been pulled from the rubble, and authorities were working to recover the body of a third person from beneath the wreckage in the working class Sayyeda Zeinab neighborhood. Building collapses are a frequent hazard in poor parts of Egypt because of lax building standards and poor maintenance.

Wedding feeds debate on Egypt presidency

A report by AP’s Lee Keath:

The bride is the daughter of a rich businessman. An intelligence chief was the witness at the wedding. And the lavish party celebrating the week-old marriage was held Friday night at the very resort where world leaders gathered to discuss Iraq.
But Egypt’s real attention is on the groom, the son of President Hosni Mubarak and — many Egyptians believe — his heir-apparent. The marriage has put new attention on the son’s controversial political role, and the uncertainty it creates in a key U.S. ally.
Gamal Mubarak, whose father has ruled with authoritarian powers for 26 years and turned 79 on Friday, has long denied any interest in running the country. In an interview this week, he repeated that, telling the Arabic satellite TV channel Orbit, “I’m not looking for any executive post.”
But key leaders in Egypt’s ruling National Democratic Party clearly want him to succeed his father, and many Egyptians think he has been tapped to become president.

Egypt judges decry changes to bill

From Al-Jazeera:

The Egyptian Shurah Council has approved in principle amendments to the judicial system law, extending the retirement age for judges from 68 to 70.
The decision on Sunday triggered the Egyptian Judges’ Club to hold an emergency general assembly to protest against the move which is seen as an attempt to keep the ruling party in power.
The judges discussed what steps to take to declare their rejection of the amendments proposed by the ruling National Democratic party.
The club is an elected body which oversees the independence of the judicial system and takes care of the interests of Egyptian judges.
Dozens of judges attended the assembly to protest against the amendments to the law, which include raising the age of retirement, something that means that the five top judges who are controlling the judicial system in Egypt at present and who are loyal to the government, will remain in their posts for two more years.
