Showdown in Gurna

On Tuesday 25 November at 11am, the authorities, without warning, cut off electricity to the inhabitants of the hills of Gurna and removed supply cables. The families – men, women, CHILDREN – who were unable to come to an agreement for their relocation are therefore forced to use candles for lighting (as petrol for lamps is unavailable), even though these villagers had been paying their electricity bills.
Only archeologists and tourism sites continue to receive electricity.
The inhabitants have the feeling of living in Gaza rather than Egypt. They went to the hospital to begin a hunger strike but were refused entry.

1 Dec: Solidarity protest

The National Forces have called for a protest Monday 1 December, 6pm, in front of Cairo’s Press Syndicate, in solidarity with the five victimized Ghazl el-Mahalla workers, the detained Muslim Brothers, incarcerated bloggers and the citizens of Sinai, and to denounce the police killings in Samalut, Ayyat, Assiut, and Aswan.

Pigs beat students at Gaza blockade protest

Baton-wielding riot police clashed with hundreds of students at Cairo University who were protesting on Wednesday against the blockade of the Gaza Strip.
About 600 police clashed with 300 students at the downtown campus, an AFP photographer said. At least one demonstrator needed treatment for head wounds.
Police entered the campus, the photographer said, despite a court ruling barring them from university grounds.
The students were independents or members of different opposition groups, said a Muslim Brotherhood official.

UPDATE: I spoke with Blogger Ahmad Abdel Fattah who covered the protest. He said the troops did NOT enter campus, contrary to what the AFP report stated. The clashes took place outside in the streets in front of the main gate.
