Al-Jazeera journalist sentenced over torture documentary

Mubarak’s regime cracks down again on those who speak out against torture:

An al Jazeera journalist has been sentenced to six months in prison in absentia by an Egyptian court after producing a film highlighting police torture.
The state security criminal court found Howayda Taha guilty of “harming Egypt’s national interest” and ordered her on Wednesday to pay a fine of 30,000 Egyptian pounds ($5,200).
She had been accused of planning to broadcast fabricated images.
Taha, who was making a documentary on torture in Egyptian police stations, described the decision as “an unjust, vindictive ruling by the government’s judiciary”.
She can appeal against the verdict.
In January, she was briefly arrested and her 50 videotapes confiscated at the Cairo airport.
Taha, an Egyptian citizen, is currently in Qatar, where al Jazeera’s headquarters are situated.

From Ikhwan Web:

The Egyptian regime released two Brotherhood MPs whom it detained on Sunday, but it jailed other MB leaders rounded in the same raid.
Cairo state security prosecution released today MPs engineer Sabri Amer and Rajab Abu Zeid, who were arrested along with 12 citizens yesterday evening in the house of engineer Fathi Shehabuddin. The prosecution did not hold any investigation with them, saying the case of red-handedness for lifting a parliamentarian’s immunity as prescribed in the constitution doesn’t apply on the case of the two MPs, specially that the investigations with the detainees confirmed that they invited the MPs to know their opinion about the Shura Council elections.
In the same context, the state security prosecution decided to jail 12 Muslim Brotherhood leaders detained in Menoufiya for 15 days pending trial.

Agents from the Omraniya Police Station arrested yesterday a number of garbage collectors, who are involved in the ongoing strike over unpaid salaries, and transferred them to the 6th of October Prosecutor’s Office, on charges of illegal assembly.

The police had invited a number of strikers to the station for negotiations with the company managers. When the strikers arrived, they found out it was a trap, and the police detained them immediately.
