Court: Police must leave university campus
The Administrative Court ruled against police presence on the Egyptian universities campuses, calling for the troops immediate evacuation.
The court criticized the “University Guards Administration” which follows the Interior Ministry and which deploys uniformed and plainclothes police officers and corporals on campuses. Instead, the court continued, each university must have a “University Guards Unit” which would follow orders from the president of the university itself (not the interior ministry).
The lawsuit was brought forward by activists from the 9th of March Movement for the Independence of Egypt’s Universities.
The Mubarak’s regime will not fully implement the court ruling and will try to maneuver. Only a sustained campaign from below on the campuses will pressure the regime to abide by the ruling and expel the Gestapo, just like what the students did in 1971.
