Live-microblogging

Posted on 22/02/200910/02/2021 By 3arabawy

While I hate it when people do not switch off their mobile phones completely during lectures and public meetings, this is one thing for sure I don’t mind using the phone for:

In the Socialist Studies Center, discussing the Gaza victory controversial.

We microblog demos and strikes always, but not as much when it comes to lectures. I think it’s a good idea to encourage the audience to live-microblog events, if no wireless or laptops are available, using their mobile phones.
We can tweet quotes from the talks or debates we are attending, say, every five minutes, to update and share the event with a much bigger audience on the net.

So keep tweeting, but please make sure your mobile phones are on silent mode.

UK: Storm of student protest over Gaza gathers force

Sit-ins at 16 universities spell return to radicalism, fueled by social networking and blogs, the Guardian reports:

Over the last week, a storm of student protests has gathered over 16 universities across England, suggesting that students are awakening from the political apathy of which they are often accused. It’s enough to bring a tear to the eye of ageing sixties radicals.
Starting at the School of Oriental and African Studies, occupations in protest at events in Gaza spread to King’s College London and the London School of Economics (LSE), then out of the capital to Sussex, Warwick, Newcastle, Oxford, Essex, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan, Bristol, Nottingham, Salford, and Kingston.

Oxford University students occupy building in solidarity with GAZA

The wave of solidarity occupations in the UK continues, as LSE students score victory.

UPDATE: New Castle University students stage a solidarity occupation.

UPDATE: More universities join the protest wave.

UPDATE: Just a quick word.. I think what the British students did in terms of setting up multiple blogs, Twitter accounts, YouTube channels to disseminate information about their actions is a fantastic idea. You could be anywhere in the world and still follow what’s going on there almost minute by minute via the RSS feeds of these websites and accounts.

UPDATE: Comrade Alia sent me two videos of the Manchester University occupation:

And below are some of the pix she took:
