Congrats!

I’d like to send a big MABROUK to Ad-Dostour labor correspondent and friend Mustafa Bassiouny, who finally joined the Press Syndicate with his colleagues yesterday.

In a relatively short time period, Mustafa managed to ascend the ranks of the country’s labor correspondents, and in my view, has become the top in his field with the best coverage of the industrial action. I call Mustafa to tell him about some strike going on, only to find him there by the factory already!! I ask Mustafa about a conflict in a factory, and just like a computer, he starts reciting the history of the factory, when it was built, how many strikes happened before, salaries of workers, bonuses, this, that, this, that… He’s a labor-encyclopedia walking on two legs. I envy him!

A solidarity message I received from MC Red October:

We’re doing our part here to build the anti-imperialist side of things. It’s not easy, but more and more people are turning against the war in Iraq and raising questions about US foreign policy more generally. It is a very exciting time. Today I’m performing near a military base with the Iraq Veterans Against the War bus tour.
We hope to see soldiers turn against the war in increasing numbers, because of how important that was to stopping the Vietnam war.

Statement from Kafr el-Dawar Textile Workers for Change

I received a statement from Kafr el-Dawar Textile Workers for Change denouncing the witch-hunt against labor activists in Ghazl el-Mahalla, Ghazl Shebeen el-Kom and Arab Polvara Spinning and Weaving. The statement called for unity among the textile workers in the above-mentioned factories to resist the crackdown.

One other thing about the statement (which I really liked) was the fact that it was mostly written in Egyptian slang. This tells a lot about who wrote it, and who the target audience is. In other words it is written by a worker, not some “intellectual,” to fellow workers.
