Beirut: Demonstration in front of Mubarak’s embassy to demand opening of Rafah crossing
I received the following message:
The popular campaign in solidarity with the Palestinian people invites you to a direct action on Wednesday 23rd of January at 3:00pm in front of the Egyptian embassy.
We demand that the Egyptian government opens the Rafah crossing, and to stop their participation in the Israeli siege of the Palestinian people in the Gaza strip.
In addition, we reject the Egyptian government’s involvement in the Israeli arbitrary collective punishment of a people who choose to resist occupation.
Palestinians storm Rafah crossing
I received the following message from Moneim:
A big number of Palestinians, who are trapped on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing, have stormed the borders but were met violently by the Egyptian police troops, according to Dr. Abdel Qader Hegazi, of the Egyptian Doctors’ Syndicate’s Humanitarian Relief Committee, who is currently at the crossing..
UPDATE: Nawara is at the borders. She reports that around 2000 Palestinian women, children and injured men are demonstrating at the Palestinian side of the Rafah Crossing demanding they would be allowed into Egypt. She adds that the Egyptian police troops haven’t fired at the protesters. Shots have been fired in the air earlier, but it was the Palestinian Police trying to disperse the crowd. The Palestinian women are jumping the fence into Egypt and begging the Central Security Forces soldiers to let them in with their injured and children.
UPDATE: Nawara is confirming there are clashes happening between the Palestinians and Mubarak’s police on the borders. Fireshots are heard. There are injuries among the women, but Nawara is not sure it’s the result of live ammunition. I recived also another email from a Cairo-based activist saying tear gas was used by Mubarak’s troops.
UPDATE: Here’s a report from Al-Jazeera.
