Govt thugs assault Helwan U students

Government thugs assaulted and severely injured two members of the Resistance Students on Helwan University campus, south of Cairo. Under the watchful eyes of the police, around 15 from the university’s office of student affairs and plainclothes thugs attacked nine RS activists when the latter tried to put up banners against the rising education fees.

Two students sustained injuries in their hands and necks, and were temporarily detained for an hour in the university’s security office, according to RS activist I spoke with earlier.

MB boycott Cairo and Ain Shams SU elections

The Muslim Brothers are boycotting the student union elections in Cairo and Ain Shams Universities to protest security interference. Just like before, thugs were allowed into Ain Shams U campus to assault the student activists.

Correction: No clashes happened in Ain Shams on the same scale as 2006. The plainclothes thugs were indeed brought to campus, and there was a stand off. But no fighting happened as MBs decided to withdraw from the elections.

Nagy, one of the leading members of Helwan University’s Resistance Students group, explaining to the audience during Tadamon’s gathering the hardships faced by students on the campuses today on the hands of the security services and the rising tuition fees.

Nagy called for more coordination between the students and the labor movement, saying the latter held the only hope for change in the country. Helwan University witnessed a strong demonstration, led by Nagy and his comrades, on 6 April in solidarity with Mahalla, during which thousands of students clashed with the police and broke the university gates taking to the streets.
