Thousands of Al-Azhar teachers on strike

Thousands of Al-Azhar school teachers are on strike in six provinces refusing to correct the exams for the High School Diploma and Preparatory School Diploma, protesting the government’s decision to exclude them from an employment reform package decreed for teachers.

The strike includes, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm, around 22,000 teachers.

Mansoura-España striker’s husband dies, as he was bringing breakfast to factory

Bad news…

Ali el-Sayyed Nour, a 45-year-old Azharite teacher, was heading in the morning to the Mansoura-España Garments factory, to bring breakfast to his wife Aida Ahmad Abdel Ghani, who’s been part of the women strikers occupying the factory since 21 April. He was hit by a train and died.

My condolences go to Aida and her fellow workers.

Activists demonstrate against health insurance privatization; Teachers to protest employment reform

Activists will hold a protest today Tuesday, 12 noon, in front of the Parliament, to protest the government’s plans to privatize the state health insurance.

Also at noon, the teachers will be staging a protest in front of their syndicate on the Zamalek island, to protest the government-proposed “Special Cadre” reforms which falls short of their demands.
