Five workers involved in labor activity in Ghazl El-Mahalla spinning factory were subjected to unofficial disciplinary measures by the company’s management, one of them told Daily News Egypt.
The measures follow a protest held on Oct. 31 during which some 800 workers protested alleged plans to privatize and sell off the factory and called for the resignation of Fouad Hassan, the company’s executive manager.
Wedad El-Demerdash said that she and four other factory employees were transferred from their posts and put under investigation as a direct result of their participation in the October protest.
“Amal Said and I have been working in the production unit for 25 years. On Nov. 1 we were prevented from entering the factory and attacked by individuals as we tried to go in,” El-Demerdash said.
“Amal was beaten and her clothes were ripped during this attack. We’ve filed complaints both with the police and within the company,” she continued.
El-Demerdash and Said were verbally informed that they had been transferred to the company’s Mahalla and Kafr El-Hegaz nurseries respectively.
El-Demerdash says that on the same day Karim El-Beheiry, an administrative employee and Muhammad El-Attar, a worker on the shop floor, were also prevented from entering the factory.
“Muhammad has been transferred to the company’s Alexandria branch and Karim to its Cairo office. None of them received official, written notification of their transfer,” El-Demerdash said.
El-Beheiry says on his blog Egyworkers that he now has to commute daily from Mahalla to work in Cairo, a round trip of at least four hours.
He was one of three Ghazl El-Mahalla workers arrested and detained for two months earlier this year following the events of April 6, when security forces in the Delta town violently put down demonstrations against rising food prices.
The latest factory worker to be transferred is Wael Habib who was prevented from entering the factory on Wednesday Nov. 26 and, according to the labor activism blog Mahalla Horizons (afaqm.wordpress.com) was informed by telephone that he had been transferred to the company’s Cairo office.
Mahalla Horizons says that Habib had been involved in distributing leaflets among workers.
The leaflets called for the revocation of the transfer orders issued against El-Demerdash, Said, El-Beheiry and El-Attar, the dismissal of Fouad Hassan and an investigation into the LE 144 million losses incurred by the company which workers attribute to Hassan, the operation of machines lying idle and finally the new investments being pumped into the company.
“One hundred and eighty workers in addition to this group of five are under investigation in the factory,” El-Demerdash said.
“Hassan holds daily meetings with workers, and in between these meetings and the investigations we can’t get on with our work. He is deliberately trying to make the factory lose money because they want to privatize it,” she continued.
Hassan could not be reached at time of press.
Activists have announced a demonstration in solidarity with the five Mahalla workers on Monday at 6 pm outside the Journalists’ Syndicate, Cairo.

SOLIDARTY MESSAGE FOR MAHALLA WORKERS
Tekstil-Sen, an independent trade union of the textile workers in Turkey, declared solidarity with the hunger striker worker leaders in Egypt.
Tekstil-Sen made a press statement today for condemning the anti-democratic practices of the Egyptian state and government over the Ghazl el Mahalla textile workers’ strike on 6th April. In the press statement where it is emphasized that imprisonment of 3 Ghazl el Mahalla workers in illegal it is said:
“Capitalism both in the world and in our country is imposing slavish working conditions to the working class. The situation of the Egyptian textile workers is an example of this. Egyptian textile workers continue their struggle to organize for two years for a human life. In Mahalla city, 25 thousand textile workers started a strike on 6th April in order to increase their wages and to maintain human working conditions. Egyptian state and government imposed state terror over the striking textile workers. They killed 7 people, including one child. Hundreds of workers are wounded and hundreds are detained and tortured. 3 worker leaders are arrested after being tortured under custody for 4 days. As in all capitalist countries in Egypt too the state showed that it is defending the interests of the capitalist class. 3 arrested workers stated that they started a hunger strike since more than a week and they will resist to death with a letter and called for class solidarity from the whole world.
As Tekstil-Sen, we salute the hunger strike of the 3 Egyptian workers who resist for their labor and honour. We send them the international solidarity feelings of the working class. We call all workers and laborers and labor organizations of the world to solidarity.
We condemn the aggressive and murdering attitude of the Egpytian state against the working class.
We demand:
-Those who are responsible for murdering 7 people including a child for starting a strike to be found and punished,
– Acceptance of the demands of the Egytian workers for their wages to be increased and for maintenance of human working conditions,
– Immediate release of the 3 workers under arrest and tortured and to be cured.

توجه اليوم وفد من عمال غزل المحلة الى نقابة غزل المحلة لتقديم 14 مطلب هى مطالب عمال غزل المحلة الى رئيس النقابة مسعد الفقى
دخل الوفد الى مقر النقابة وكان المقرر ان يكون 10 افراد ولكن فوجىء اعضاء النقابة بأن الوفد متكون بأكثر من 30 عامل من عمال الشركة وبدء اجتماع تقديم المطالب
تحدث فى البداية القيادى العمال جهاد طمان الى رئيس نقابة غزل المحلة مسعد الفقى عن أن عمال غزل المحلة لهم مطالب وقد حضر الوفد اليوم لتقديمها الى النقابة وأعطاءها فرصة لمدة أسبوع فى الرد على هذه المطالب
واشار جهاد طمان فى حديثه الى ان مطالب عمال غزل المحلة هى مطالب مشروعة اقرها المسئولين من قبل وتحديدا بعد كل اضراب من ديسمبر 2006 الى سبتمبر 2007 ولكن لم يتم تحقيق أى مطلب منها
وأكمل الحديث وائل حبيب أحد القيادات العمالية بالشركة مهاجما رئيس النقابة حول كيفية تواجد الأمن بمقر نقابة غزل المحلة اثناء تفاوض الأمن وعن المحاولات الامنية الفاشلة لأجهاض ذهاب الوفد وتسائل وائل هل هو فى أجتماع عمالى أم أمنى وحاول رئيس النقابة تبرير تواجد الامن بأنهم عمال ربما يكونوا راغبين فى سماع الاجتماع وهذا ما اعتبره وائل تبرير سخيف وذلك بسبب تواجد عناصر من أمن الدولة على القهوة المتواجدة أمام النقابة بالأضافة لتواجد عناصر من أمن الدولة داخل الأجتماع
ثم تناول الحديث القيادى كمال الفيومى مطالبا رئيس النقابة بسرعة تلبية مطالب عمال غزل المحلة والتى لم يتم تحقيقها على مر سنتين منذ اضراب ديسمبر 2006 وحتى الان وحذر كمال من استمرار تجاهل المطالب لأن ذلك قد يتسبب فى عواقب وخيمة
وتدخل مستكملا الحديث القيادى جمال أبو الأسعاد وهاجم رئيس النقابة والذى أخذ يحاول تبرير كل مطلب واخبره جمال ان الوفد حضر اليوم لتقديم المطالب لا لتبرير المطالب واكد جمال على ان المطالب شرعية وقانونية
وعلى الجانب الأخر هاجم كريم البحيرى رئيس النقابة حينما حاول اسكاته عن الحديث ولكن كريم توجه له قائلا انه احد عمال الشركة وان من حقة التحدث وقتما شاء داخل النقابة لانها ملك للعمال واستكمل كريم حديثة بأن مطالب عمال غزل المحلة مطالب مشروعة ولا ينتظر تبرير من رئيس النقابة لهذه المطالب ولكن عليه التحرك ورفعها للمسئولين والمساهمة فى حلها
واضاف كريم فى اخر حديثة انه لن يتم التنازل عن اى مطلب من المطالب ولن يقبل عمال المحلة بالمماطلة من جديد من قبل المسئولين وان انعقاد المجلس الاعلى للأجور الذى سينعقد يوم الاثنين 18 يناير توقيت جيد لتقديم هذه المطالب ليراعى المجلس فى تحديده للأجور متطلبات العمال فى قطاع الغزل والنسيج
وعلى الجانب الأخر وأمام الهجوم العمالى من القيادات العمالية قال رئيس النقابة مسعد الفقى ان مطالب عمال غزل المحلة تم ارسالها قبل الاجتماع الى رئيس النقابة العامة ورئيس الاتحاد وانه يحاول جاهدا حلها مع المسئولين وانه ذهب اليوم هو وهيئة مكتب النقابة الى المفوض العام واستطاع الحصول على بعض المطالب والتى تستطيع الشركة حلها وافاد بأن المفوض العام للشركة فؤاد حسان لم يرفض أى مطلب
وأكمل مسعد الفقى انه سيقف بجانب العمال ولكن يجب مراعاة المطالب وهذا ما هاجمه فيه العمال وقالوا ان المطالب هى مطالب شرعية ولن يتم التنازل عنها مهما حدث
وعلى هامش الاجتماع تواجد الكثير من عناصر أمن الدولة داخل وخارج النقابة ولكن التواجد لم يمنع الوفد من الوصول للنقابة رغم تعنت الأمن مع بعض العمال ورفضه لمرور البعض منهم ودخول مقر النقابة
وقد انتهى الاجتماع الذى بدء الساعة الثالثة والنصف حوالى الساعة الخامسة بعد شد وجذب انتهى بترك المطالب لرئيس النقابة ومنحه 15 يوما حسب طلبة للرد على وقت تحقيق هذه المطالب
