Egyptians’ anger approaches boiling point

Posted on 09/10/200803/01/2021 By 3arabawy

“Public disaffection with the government appears to have reached an all-time high,” reports IPS.

And speaking of public anger, I’ve just received news that citizens have set a police car on fire after it hit a woman in the town of Samalut.

UPDATE: It’s not a car accident as reported initially. It’s worse!

Around 100 Egyptians set fire to a police truck on a main road in central Egypt on Thursday after a pregnant woman died during a police raid on her house, police sources said.
Mervat Abdel Salam Abdel Fattah, 32, stood in the way of police looking for her brother in a case of theft in the town of Samalut, 200 km (120 miles) south of Cairo, they said.
A policeman hit her with the butt of his pistol and she fell and died, they added.
In revenge friends and relatives attacked and set fire to a police pickup truck on the road from Cairo to the southern city of Assiut. A brigadier was taken to hospital with injuries from a beating and most of the policemen fled, they said.

The pigs are of course denying any wrongdoing, claiming:

The woman was pushed to the ground by officers when she would not let them enter her home to look for her brother, a suspected thief, police said.
She was in the last stages of pregnancy and died of internal bleeding caused by the fall, police added.

UPDATE: Despite police intimidation, the HMLC lawyers managed to meet with Mervat’s family.

In every single event, demonstration or strike we have to snap at least one photo of the police officers, corporals, and plainclothes thugs present. We have to profile them, put their faces on the web and circulate their photos. A police officer cannot show up for a demonstration, beat the hell of out of peaceful protesters, then walk home and go out in his neighborhood with his family to have fun. No! A State Security officer cannot spend the day electrocuting the balls of a detainee and inserting a stick up someone else’s ass and then just simply go out in the weekend with his kids to the park peacefully, or have shisha in a public coffee shop, while those around think of him as a “normal” human being. These are dangerous torturers and rapists whom we do not want as neighbors or friends. They have to be exposed in front of their children, parents, neighbors and peers. Their pictures have to be everywhere, from the internet to the streets. And just like in any respectable country when there’s a dangerous criminal at large statements are broadcast with advisories and warnings to the public, we should also alert the citizens to those dangerous criminals whom we can’t unfortunately report to the police coz they are the police. Their pictures have to reach the widest range possible.

We need everyone’s help in that campaign. For a start, visit the group page on Flickr and begin uploading ya shabab. I’m sure many of you have tons of pictures on your hard drives of previous demos that may have clear shots of the faces of police agents present in the scene. Don’t leave them lying there. Start uploading whatever you have to the Piggipedia. Try to include in the captions and/or tags the place of the protest/event and whether you have any additional information about those police officers.

Gaza solidarity activists abused in custody

Posted on 06/10/200809/01/2021 By 3arabawy

A number of Gaza solidarity activists, kidnapped by the police this morning, have been released.

Grain Mills worker Nagy Rashad blogs about his experience with the police who also detained his seven and eight year old kids.

I spoke with Ghazl el-Mahalla labor leader Kamal el-Fayoumi, who was released around two hours ago. He said he was kidnapped by the police six blocks away from the Press Syndicate around 10am. He was approached by a plainclothes agent who requested his National ID Card, while four other thugs surrounded him. He was taken to a truck with three others, which drove them to Tora’s Central Security Forces Camp, south of Cairo. Kamal said he was blindfolded and interrogated by a State Security officer, who slapped him on the face a number of times, punched him in the stomach, while shouting the worst verbal insults. Kamal met at least six other detainees inside who said they faced similar treatment. Around two hours ago, the detainees were taken, split into two groups and thrown out in a remote desert area near Maadi.
