Police conscripts on murder charge

Posted on 18/06/200801/04/2015 By 3arabawy

From the BBC…

Ten Egyptian paramilitary police conscripts have been charged with beating a colleague to death in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.
Egypt’s police have been criticised for condoning a culture of brutality, a charge denied by the interior ministry.
The incident came to light after an internal report concluded that Ali Zarif had killed himself.
But a subsequent criminal investigation found that his body was covered in cuts and bruises.
The Egyptian press has carried some gruesome details of how the conscripts were allegedly given orders by their superiors to beat their colleague with sticks.
The prosecutor has remanded the 10 conscripts in custody but it is not known yet whether any of the officers allegedly involved in the incident will face any charges.
The conscripts belong to what is known here as the Central Security Forces.
These are anti-riot troops that are often deployed in large numbers against demonstrators or striking workers.

Mahalla testimony

Testimony from a Mahalla labor organizer involved in the 6 April uprising…

The torture faced by the citizens in the police stations and State Security buildings was much worse than what the activists had to deal with. The police (officers) were insane… They were shocked they had lost control in some areas of the town… They wanted to punish everyone and prove they were still in control… In Mahalla’s 2nd Police Station, for example, officer Muhammad Maissara brought in the detainees, made them lie on the floor, whipped them, and then brought the Central Security Forces conscripts to run on top of them as if they (the detainees) were carpets on the floor!

Amnesty: Mubarak’s regime must stop flights to torture in Eritrea

Posted on 14/06/200803/03/2021 By 3arabawy

I received the following statement from Amnesty International:

The Egyptian authorities are preparing to forcibly return up to 1,200 asylum-seekers to Eritrea. This follows the deportation of 200 people on Thursday evening and 200 others on Wednesday 11 June. Amnesty International has said that the organization fears 180 more might be deported today, late in the evening.
Asylum-seekers returned to Eritrea are at risk of torture and other ill-treatment, particularly those who have fled from compulsory military service. Most are likely to be arbitrarily detained incommunicado in inhumane conditions for weeks, sometimes years.
