The Public Transportation strike has just been suspended in VICTORY! The govt yielded to all the strikers’ demands.
More details later…
Hossam el-Hamalawy
Just came back from visiting the public transportation strikers in Nasr City’s El-Mostaqbal Garage, where the total labor force (700 bus drivers, collectors, mechanics) are striking, joined by thousands of their colleagues across Greater Cairo. Initial reports: 14 Garages in Cairo and Giza are striking, but 2 in Giza are not (Athar el-Nabbi and Fom el-Khaleeg).
The workers in Nasr City have started collecting signatures (see pic above) demanding the impeachment of the state-backed General Union of Transportation Workers’ local officials, threatening to establish independent union.
There are already rumors circulating the govt will submit to the strikers’ demands today.
I’m receiving information the Greater Cairo public transportation strike is expanding. Today more “garages” joined the strike.
More details later in the day.
