Ten years after the Egyptian revolution shook the world, a vicious military regime has detained tens of thousands without trial in dire conditions. This briefing for trade union activists highlights the cases of six socialist activists who are currently detained on spurious charges. They include journalists, a public transport worker, lawyers and a human rights researcher.

AUC workers threaten new strike 19 April

Workers at the American University in Cairo went on strike this week over contracts and work conditions. The protests will resume on 19 April if the administration do not respond to their demands, as stated by the workers’ independent syndicate.

Adel el-Badri strikes again… This time he’s outright supporting General Ahmad Shafiq, the counterrevolution’s presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, Badri is still quoted by journalists and Western scholars as a “trade unionist”, rather than his real truth: an opportunist imposter with corrupt politics, whose “union” does not have any presence on the ground whatsoever.

In the past, the state-backed unions played a central role in controlling and/or mobilizing the working class on behalf of Mubarak. Today, the continue to be the loyal servants of the regime and its new masters, the army junta.

The state-run federation general unions incited against the February 11th general strike calls in the media and workplaces. The picture below I took during the 10 February march on the Ministry of Defense is just one example.

The state-run public transport workers distributed banners and forced drivers on stick them on their buses, denouncing the strike calls. I and other protesters had a chat with the driver above, and he assured us he had nothing to do with this banner and he was coerced by his managers into sticking it on the bus.
