It’s a tribute to all those who have campaigned for Palestine, especially in the last year over Gaza, that the TUC has passed a resolution calling for boycott and critical of the Israeli union Histradut.

Imposing unions from above to counter those built from below
Via Per:
Shorouk reports: Hussein Megawer, head of the Egyptian Trade Union Federation, has announced that a new general union – the 24th in Egypt – is being established for employees of tax and customs authorities who previously belonged to the union for bank and insurance employees. The new imposed-from-above-union will supposedly represent the employees of the real estate tax collectors, who founded their own independent union in December 2008. This decision comes as the leader of the free union had been summoned for interrogation by the North Giza prosecutor today after being accused by Megawer of the ETUF of “spreading information that has damaged the reputation of Egypt.“
Crackdown on the Free Union continues
Kamal Abu Eita, the president of the independent Union of Real Estate Tax Authority Employees, has been summoned by the North Giza prosecutor for interrogation, today Saturday, over charges leveled against him by the corrupt, state-backed General Federation of Trade Unions President Hussein Megawer. The latter accuses Abu Eita of “spreading false information that has hurt the reputation of Egypt and its official trade union system.”
Abu Eita is not planning to show up at the Prosecutor’s office. Labor and socialist lawyers are expected to request postponement of the proceedings.
In other news, the ILO has rewarded Megawer and the corrupt General Federation for their onslaught on the independent unions by taking Egypt off its “black list” that included the worst 25 countries in terms of labor rights violations!
