Kafr el-Dawar textile workers on strike

Posted on 04/02/200716/01/2021 By 3arabawy

I’m receiving news that that workers have started a strike and a sit-in at the Fine Textile factory in Kafr el-Dawar, in a conflict with their government management over bonuses.

The sit-in started yesterday with the workers of the second shift (around 2pm), only to be joined by the night shift workers, and today’s morning shift workers. This means the entire factory is on strike now.

The total labor force of the factory is 14,000 workers. I don’t have information about the total number of workers occupying the factory now. I’ll post more updates later when I receive additional info.

The Kafr el-Dawar Fine Textile factory triggers so many memories for Egypt’s leftists and workers. This is the Nile Delta factory where Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser started his reign in 1952 by executing two Communist workers: Khamis and el-Baqari. This is the same factory that was stormed by the Interior Ministry’s Special Forces in 1984 and 1994 to break the workers’ strike using live ammunition, leading to casualties among the strikers and their families who flocked to the factory in solidarity.

Ghazl Shebeen el-Kom Textile strike enters 6th day

The 4000-strong workers strike in the Menoufiya-based textile factory enters its fifth sixth day. I’m currently too busy with some commitments to follow up personally the strike development, but I saw on Al-Jazeera yesterday that a number of workers in the factory have already started a hunger strike.

Here’s a photo of the factory occupation, published by Al-Wafd:

Moreover, I’ve just read on Omar’s blog that around 3000 workers at the Cairo Poltry Company have started a strike after the company CEO decided to stop paying bonuses and froze the annual salaries’ raises. No more details are available at the moment.

Ghazl Shebeen el-Kom textile strike continues

The workers at Ghazl Shebeen el-Kom Textile factory are continuing their strike and sit-in for the third day on the row. Minister of Labor Aisha Abdel Hadi, coming under pressure, has come out yesterday with a statement promising to look into the workers demands, but called for ending the strike immediately. The minister’s statement was rejected by the strikers.

And here’s my previous posting, that included a phone interview with one of the strikers.
