Employees at the Central Auditing Organization, the country’s corruption watchdog, continue their protests against their director, Gawdat el-Malt, accusing him of involvement in corruption. Ironically, el-Malt had assumed some hero status among some after a number of stunts at the parliament and in the media over the past year, where he exposed some corruption cases. But the striking employees accuse their boss of turning a blind eye to more corruption cases, failing to publicize reports “which remained on the shelves” and never saw the light. The civil servants are also demanding the complete Independence of the CAO from any executive authority to be able to monitor and act against corruption without interferences. Officially the CAO is under the supervision of the presidency.
