Ad-Dostour on Egyptian Police classism

Posted on 24/01/200703/02/2021 By 3arabawy

Go to the nearest news stand and buy today’s issue of the weekly independent Ad-Dostour. They have a couple of good features, marking Police Day, on how classist the recruitment process is to the Police Academy.

The potential eligible cadets who come from poor backgrounds are largely disqualified, since the poor are viewed to be “more prone to corruption, unlike the rich recruits whose bellies are full already so they won’t need to steal or take bribes,” according to retired senior officers interviewed by Ad-Dostour.

You know, that line about putting people whose “bellies are full” in positions of power is common in so many countries…but oddly enough, the full-bellied go right on stealing.
