Here are the latest updates:
Ihab Magid Farouk, the 19-year-old victim of Imbaba police abuse, and his family were interrogated yesterday by the North Giza Prosecutor, who still kept him in police custody pending investigation on four charges of theft and involvement in a street fight. The EOHR lawyers have been pushing for his release, saying there were no previous indictments, and Ihab should be free till a court looks into those theft allegations.
Ihab spent the first two nights at the Imbaba Police Station, but I’ve received news that he was transferred today to El-Qata Prison in Qalyoubiya, and will stand trial in court on 19 February on one of the four charges, which the EOHR lawyers themselves have not been notified with!
The officer who supervised Ihab’s abuse and filmed the slapping video (above), I learned, is named Lt. Kareem Abdallah Abdel Mohsen. I’m still trying to confirm this, but it seems Lt. Kareem is not serving anymore at the Imbaba Police Station. There are rumors he had been transferred to Omraniya Police Station. The officer may be prosecuted sometime next week.
The three corporals involved in the case (Ahmad Abdel Fattah, Ahmad el-Wardani, and a third whose alias is Dahesh) showed up yesterday at the Prosecutor for interrogation. They are still under detention pending investigation into the abuse case.
